A gauger was the Crown's exciseman — he dipped his rod into every cask to measure the King's share. He'd often take a kinder measure than the tax was paid on, and the distillery would thank him with a bottle or two of the good stuff. Just like the angel's shareThe whisky lost to evaporation as a cask matures in the warehouse — around 2% a year, surrendered to the air., it was the gauger's share. We keep his precision and his taste for the good casks — none of his taxes.
